Papplewick 1940’s

last year I attended the 1940’s weekend at Pappelwick pumping station in Nottinghamshire, a victorian era heritage museum that’s kept the old steam pumping station in a beautiful running condition. They hold various events throughout the year, one of which being a 1940’s weekend, which is a great opportunity to capture people in period clothing without the awful distractions of ugly modern era clothes, and mobile phones.

When i’m at events like this I try my hardest not to include anything modern within the photographs, which made the pumping station itself very difficult to photograph with just how busy it was. That day it was under steam power, and the weather was a mix of rain and sun, so the pumping house itself was always busy with people, so unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures of the that itself, I rather focused on what was going on outside.

For events like this I tend to use black & white because it feels more fitting, but for a change I went with Portra 400 in my MP.

Im really hoping to attend a few 1940’s events this year, they are always full of interesting subjects, and its much easier to approach people for portraits in these situations, because basically everyone that’s here dressed up wants to be seen and show off their ensemble, so its less daunting if you aren’t as confident approaching strangers, like myself!
